President Donald Trump, who was speaking at a rally in Montana, said that should he ever be impeached the U.S. would turn into a “third-world country,” adding that he would blame such a development on supporters who do not vote in the November midterm elections.
The President’s comments come amid calls from Democrats for Congress to impeach him if the party wins majority in both chambers in November. Presidents can be impeached for treason, bribery, or “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
Trump could face impeachment over conflicts of interest involving his family and their businesses, as well as over possible obstruction of justice. A poll conducted at the end of last month showed that 49 percent of respondents believe impeachment proceedings should begin, while another 46 percent do not think so.
“This election, you aren’t just voting for a candidate. You’re voting for which party controls Congress. A very important thing. Very important thing,” Trump said, according to Newsweek.
He continued by asking how a person who has done nothing wrong can be impeached. “Our economy is good. How do you do it? It is a hell of a place in Washington,” Trump told his supporters.
President Trump further maintained the United States would become a third-world country if Democrats take control of Congress “because if the opposite party becomes president, every time before it even starts, before you’ve even found out whether or not he or she is going to do a great job, they’ll say: ‘We want to impeach him!’ And they’ll impeach him. It’s so ridiculous.”
Trump also told his supporters in Montana that the only way for him to be impeached is if they don’t go out to vote, and that it would be a shame if that happened because of how good of a job he is doing.
