The president of Bosnia’s Serb Republic accused the American embassy of interfering in the country’s elections, U.S. diplomats responded and said that is a “wild conspiracy” theory.
According to Reuters, Milorad Dodik accused the U.S. Agency of International Development (USAID) of using its non-governmental organizations in the country to influence Bosnia’s election, adding that the Bosnian central government has conspired with USAID in the meddling.
“Aiming to directly interfere in internal affairs of the Republika Srpska and Bosnia, USAID … tries to avoid all institutions and to grant funds under cover of the alleged fight against crime and corruption,” Dodik said, according to Reuters.
Dodik has previously had a fraught relationship with the U.S. The U.S. imposed sanctions on him last year over his effort to obstruct a peace deal in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo is currently negotiating with the Bosnian central government on programs to combat corruption in the country, Reuters reported.
The embassy reportedly dismissed Dodik’s accusation of election meddling.
“Once again, the assistance of the people of the United States is being used to support wild conspiracy theories in the interest of election campaigning in Bosnia,” the embassy said in a statement to Reuters.
