Lewandowski Criticizes Congress for Not Passing Immigration Bill

Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski on Thursday stated that it is a “shame” that Republican and Democratic lawmakers did not succeed in passing a comprehensive immigration plan.

“This is something that has to get done. We’re seeing families separated at the border. We see children taken from their parents, but we also see this massive influx of people coming into our country illegally, and there’s nothing we can do to stop it,” Lewandowski said.

“That’s not right,” he added. “It wouldn’t be acceptable in any other country in the world, so we can’t have it here.”

Lewandowski later blamed Democratic lawmakers for not giving President Donald Trump the funding he needs in order to build a wall along the U.S. southern border, saying the lack of the barrier has contributed to immigration woes.

“It’s important to remember that the President promised to build this wall on the southern border and the Republicans, candidly, and the Democrats in Congress have failed to do that. They’ve failed to give the President the money he needs to do that, and there has to be accountability,” he said.

On Wednesday a Republican bill on immigration which was seen as a compromise was rejected in a 121-300 vote.

According to The Hill, the compromise legislation reserved $25 billion for Trump’s border wall and other security measures in exchange for providing a pathway to citizenship for so-called “Dreamers” who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

The legislation also contained a proposal to end the controversial practice of family separations at the border.

Trump urged lawmakers to support the bill in a tweet earlier Wednesday.

“HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY, EVEN THOUGH THE DEMS WON’T LET IT PASS IN THE SENATE. PASSAGE WILL SHOW THAT WE WANT STRONG BORDERS & SECURITY WHILE THE DEMS WANT OPEN BORDERS = CRIME. WIN!” the President said.
