George Conway Defends Special Counsel’s Probe

Kellyanne Conway’s husband, George Conway, defended Monday special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, embracing a position he has held on Twitter for some time.

Conway published a column on Monday titled “The Terrible Arguments Against the Constitutionality of the Mueller Investigation,” in which he asserts Mueller’s probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia is constitutional.

The piece comes only a week after President Donald Trump called the probe “unconstitutional” on Twitter and indicted former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort tried repeatedly to cut into the special counsel’s authority, CNN writes.

The 3,500-word column which comes in direct response to Trump’s tweet argues that the special counsel was given the power to investigate by the Justice Department and that both Congress and the courts have empowered such investigations.

In his essay, Conway, a lawyer, also attacks a law professor who previously claimed Mueller has acted outside the Constitution, deeming him “a rogue prosecutor run amok.” Conway further refutes claims of unconstitutionality by using Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s congressional testimony about Mueller’s appointment.

He also criticizes the President’s legal team, which he says makes arguments which are not “well-grounded in law and fact” and as such have “little more rigor than the tweet that promoted them.”

This is not the first time that Conway has expressed disagreement with the President. He previously tweeted his skepticism about Trump’s public statements about the travel ban and has repeatedly mocked the President on the social network.

In a tweet from late May, responding to the accusation that Mueller’s lawyers’ political donations create the appearance of a liberal bias, Conway wrote, “Nope. His hirings show that he hired lawyers. And lawyers overwhelmingly tend, especially in the elite ranks, to be liberal Democrats.”
