Trump Says He Has Right to Pardon Himself

President Donald Trump on Monday said that he has the right to provide himself with a pardon but insisted he won’t need to do so because he has not done anything that would require one, CNN reported.

“As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself, but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong?” the President tweeted. “In the meantime, the never-ending Witch Hunt, led by 13 very Angry and Conflicted Democrats (& others) continues into the mid-terms!” Trump added, referring to the special counsel investigation into Russia’s election meddling.

Trump’s comments come after The New York Times obtained and published a January letter from the President’s legal team, in which the attorneys say the President has the power to pardon “if he so desired.”

Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani said that while the President “probably” does have the power to issue himself a pardon, doing so would be politically challenging.

“I think the political ramifications of that would be tough. Pardoning other people is one thing. Pardoning yourself is another. Other presidents have pardoned people in circumstances like this, both in their administration and sometimes the next president, even of a different party will come along and pardon,” Giuliani said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Meanwhile, Trump also praised his 500th day in office saying that he accomplished more than any of his predecessors in their first 500 days.

“This is my 500th Day in Office and we have accomplished a lot – many believe more than any President in his first 500 days. Massive Tax & Regulation Cuts, Military & Vets, Lower Crime & Illegal Immigration, Stronger Borders, Judgeships, Best Economy & Jobs EVER, and much more,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The President also mentioned Republican attempts to repeal and replace ObamaCare and appeared to reference Senator John McCain who voted against the repeal bill.

“….We had Repeal & Replace done (and the saving to our country of one trillion dollars) except for one person, but it is getting done anyway,” Trump said.
