President Donald Trump’s newest attorney, Rudy Giuliani, stated on Wednesday that digging up dirt on political opponents is not a crime, no matter where the information comes from, The Hill reported.
“When I ran against them [Democrats] they were looking for dirt on me every day. That’s what you do, maybe you shouldn’t, but you do. Nothing illegal about that,” Giuliani told Fox News’s Laura Ingraham on Wednesday night.
“Even if it comes from a Russian, a German, an American, doesn’t matter,” he added.
Giuliani’s comments come as special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election enters its second year.
According to The Hill, Giuliani also told Ingraham that there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia because the campaign never used the information in the 2016 presidential campaign.
“They never used it,” he said. “They rejected it. If there was collusion with the Russians, they would have used it.”
Giuliani also added that the FBI may have placed a spy in Trump’s presidential campaign.
“I don’t know,” he said when asked if there was a spy in the 2016 campaign.
However, Giuliani mentioned the topic later while discussing what he said were instances of misconduct.
“What they did with Manafort, what they did with Michael Cohen, all the illegitimate things they’ve done — possibly placing a spy in the Trump campaign,” Giuliani said.
“All these things are areas where indictments have been dismissed because of government misconduct,” Giuliani said.
“I do not understand what Bob was thinking of, hiring these people,” he added, referring to special counsel Robert Mueller.
Trump is regularly criticizing Mueller’s probe into alleged ties between his presidential campaign and Russian meddling in the 2016 election, saying it’s a “witch hunt” and has called for the special counsel’s investigation to end.
