Iranian Supreme Leader Accuses Trump of Being a Liar

The supreme leader of Iran on Wednesday criticized President Donald Trump’s announcement that he is withdrawing the U.S. from the nuclear accord with Iran, saying his comments were all lies.

Reuters reported that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denounces the speech as “silly and superficial” on his website.

“He had maybe more than 10 lies in his comments,” Khamenei said.  “He threatened the regime and the people, saying ‘I’ll do this and that.’ Mr. Trump, I tell you on behalf of the Iranian people: You’ve made a mistake.”

“This man will turn to dust and his body will become food for snakes and ants,” he added, according to the news service.  “And the Islamic Republic will still be standing.”

On Tuesday President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the international nuclear accord with Iran which may result in additional conflict in the Middle East. The withdrawal besides, upsetting European allies, is also expected to cast uncertainty over global oil supplies.

Trump on Tuesday said that it was “a horrible, one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made.”

Trump also imposed new sanctions on Iran.

“I said many times from the first day: don’t trust America,” Khamenei said, adding that he also didn’t trust Britain, France, and Germany.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and British Prime Minister Theresa May stated that they are concerned about Trump’s decision to separate from the agreement.

During the last month, they also came to Washington as an attempt to change the U.S. President’s decision hoping the deal will be preserved.  However, by last week it was already becoming increasingly clear to some diplomats that Trump’s decision can’t be changed.

“We felt like we were going through the motions,” said a person close to the negotiations.

Even Trump’s top aides had not been attempting to aggressively talk with Trump because his mind had already been made up, a White House official said.

The leaders encouraged other nations to stick to the deal, but Khamenei said it wasn’t enough reassurance, Reuters reported.

“If you can’t get a definite guarantee, then the nuclear deal cannot be continued,” he said.

On Tuesday, members of Iran’s parliament chanted “Death to America” and set fire to an American flag printed on paper.
