Schumer Supports Trump’s Sanctions on China

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer pointed out that he is supporting the efforts President Donald Trump makes in order to pressure China on trade issues. Schumer told New York AM 970 radio host John Catsimatidis that he gives credit to Trump for “squeezing China.”

The top Democrat also added that the President is “on the right path, particularly with the intellectual property.”

“China is not helpful to the United States. They are happy to see us in trouble,” Schumer said in an interview broadcast Sunday. “And the way to get at them, what is the mother lode for China, is their trade with us. They take advantage of American workers, American wealth, American companies regularly. I called them rapacious,” Schumer added.

According to the New York Post, Schumer later said that pressuring China on trade is the only way to force the Chinese to cooperate with American interests in North Korea, where the U.S. is attempting to get North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to give up his nuclear weapons program.

Trump has been attacking China for its trade practices since he started his campaign in 2015.

In the last month, Trump’s administration announced that the U.S. will impose $50 billion in tariffs against Chinese imports to the U.S., threatening that another $100 billion might also be imposed if China doesn’t do something.

Meanwhile, China vowed to fight back with its own tariffs on U.S. goods.

However, several lawmakers said that they are worried that the tariffs could start a trade war with China, which could hurt many American workers and farmers who are exporting their goods to the country.

Although President Trump accused China of devaluing its currency last week, the Treasury Department ruling last week reported that Beijing is not manipulating the value of its money.
