Former attorney of President Donald Trump, Jay Goldberg, stated that he urged the President not to have a complete trust in Michael Cohen and not to expect that he will fully protect him while warning him that Cohen would eventually cooperate with federal prosecutors.
Goldberg told The Wall Street Journal that he spoke to Trump on the phone last Friday. In the call, he warned Trump that “on a scale of 1 to 100, where 100 represents the full protection of the President, Cohen isn’t even a 1.”
“Michael will never stand up for you,” Goldberg said he told Trump.
According to the WSJ, Goldberg is one of the several personal advisers that Trump has reached out to recently to help with the criminal investigation into Cohen, who is known as a longtime personal attorney and “fixer” for the president.
Last week Cohen’s home, hotel room, and office were raided by the FBI after federal prosecutors in Manhattan obtained a search warrant, based in part on a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller. After the raid prosecutors revealed that Cohen has been under criminal investigation for months.
Reportedly agents were seeking documents and records related to payments of the two women who have alleged having affairs with Trump years ago. Both adult-film actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal were given hush money so they won’t share their story.
Goldberg told the WSJ that he warned Trump that Cohen will start to cooperate with prosecutors if they put enough pressure on him. He also said that he does not think that Trump and his campaign has not been colluding with Moscow.
Cohen during the last years has made a reputation for himself as one of Trump’s most loyal advisers. Earlier this month, he tweeted that he would “always protect our @POTUS.”
