Instead of WHCA Dinner, Trump to Rally in Michigan

President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak at a campaign rally in Michigan on April 28, which is the same night of the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner, CNN reported.

The President’s campaign announced Tuesday that the event is set to take place at 7 p.m. in Washington, Michigan, which is located just outside of Detroit. This is the second year in a row that President Trump will hold a rally outside Washington instead of attending the traditional annual dinner.

However, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is expected to attend the dinner this year in order to represent the White House.

“While the fake news media will be celebrating themselves with the denizens of Washington society in the swamp that evening, President Trump will be in a completely different Washington, celebrating our national economic revival with patriotic Americans,” Michael Glassner, who is the chief operating officer of the Trump campaign, said in a statement.

In an interview earlier this month, Trump gave an indication that he is not going to the event for a second straight year. All previous presidents have attended the event where they addressed the press.

Although the event is meant to celebrate members of the WHCA and young journalists for their work, in recent times it is also seen as a glamorous celebrity-fueled night where politicians, reporters, and editors interact with stars from the entertainment industry.

The New York Times is one of the several media organizations that no longer attends the event.

Since President Trump took office, he has been in a confrontation with most of the biggest media outlets, repeatedly attacking those like The New York Times, The Washington Post and CNN, saying that they are part of the “fake news” sensation and are regularly questioning the credibility of their reporting on Twitter.
