On Sunday, the White House dismissed all speculations that President Donald Trump is considering firing special counsel Robert Mueller after Trump criticized the federal probe into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russian election meddling in his weekend tweets.
“In response to media speculation and related questions being posed to the Administration, the White House yet again confirms that the President is not considering or discussing the firing of the Special Counsel, Robert Mueller,” Trump’s lawyer Ty Cobb stated.
According to The New York Times, Trump’s lawyers had been asking him for months to avoid the specific mention of Mueller on the social media platform. But several aides told the Times that the President is feeling more encouraged than ever to speak his mind.
Trump’s attacks on Mueller started on Saturday after his personal lawyer John Dowd published a statement where he called on Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to end the probe on the President’s behalf. Dowd later changed his statement, saying that he gave the statement in his personal capacity.
“I pray that Acting Attorney General Rosenstein will follow the brilliant and courageous example of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and Attorney General Jeff Sessions and bring an end to alleged Russia Collusion investigation manufactured by [Andrew] McCabe’s boss James Comey based upon a fraudulent and corrupt Dossier,” Dowd said in a statement first reported by The Daily Beast.
Later, Trump supported Dowd’s statement, adding that Mueller’s investigation should have never been started in the first place.
Meanwhile, Mueller reportedly subpoenaed the Trump Organization last week and gave the President’s legal team a series of questions for a potential interview with Trump. The President stated last year that Mueller would be crossing a “red line” if his office began investigating his family’s finances with other countries outside of Russia.
