United States Representative Claudia Tenney said that many people who commit mass murder turn out to be Democrats, Associated Press reported. The Republican congresswoman made the statement during a discussion about calls for stricter gun control on Talk 1300 Radio.
“Yeah, well, obviously there is a lot of politics in it, and it’s interesting that so many of these people that commit the mass murders end up being Democrats, but the media doesn’t talk about that either,” Tenney said without offering any evidence to support the statement.
According to Democratic state Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, Tenney’s suggestions were disgusting and toxic. Brindisi, who is opposing Tenney this fall, urged her to apologize.
“This toxic rhetoric is shameful and a new low even for Ms. Tenney. Inserting politics into a national tragedy is beyond the pale and disgusting. She should apologize now to spare our region any more national embarrassment,” he wrote on Twitter.
He was not the only one who criticized the congresswoman. Evan Lukaske, a spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said that the Representative showed “how completely unfit she is to serve in Congress.” Representative Gerry Connolly, a Democrat of Virginia, also urged Tenney to apologize.
Tenney later stated that her comments were taken out of context and that she was fed up with the media and liberals trying to politicize tragedies and demonize law-abiding gun owners and conservative Americans every time there is a tragedy.
“While we know the perpetrators of these atrocities have a wide variety of political views, my comments are in response to a question about the failure to prosecute illegal gun crime. I will continue to stand up for law-abiding citizens who are smeared by anti-gun liberal elitists,” she said.
Tenney made the remarks only a few days after the school shooting in Florida, which left 17 people dead.
