President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka is scheduled to lead the presidential delegation for the Winter Olympics closing ceremony in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
A White House official told CNN on Monday that President Trump and the United States Olympics Committee requested that the first daughter go to the closing ceremony.
Apart from the closing ceremony, Ivanka Trump will also attend some of the Olympic sporting events where she will support the American athletes. Ivanka last month shared on Twitter that she was “getting ready for the upcoming Winter Olympics.”
The Winter Olympics are set to open later this week in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
According to The Hill, Vice President Mike Pence will be leading the United States delegation to the opening ceremony. Pence will be joined by the top U.S. general in South Korea and other military and diplomatic officials. A report that came this weekend said that Pence will be pushing back against any kind of positive media narrative the Winter Olympics will create for North Korea.
“The Vice President will remind the world that everything the North Koreans do at the Olympics is a charade to cover up the fact that they are the most tyrannical and oppressive regime on the planet,” an aide for Pence stated.
Tensions between Washington and Pyongyang have soared over the past year amid a series of advancements in North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
The Winter Olympics are starting as the situation has cooled slightly between North and South Korea. North Korea is sending a delegation of athletes to compete in this month’s Olympics. The North and South delegations will also walk together during the opening ceremony.
North Korea was not initially expected to attend the Winter Olympics, but rare talks with South Korean officials in January led to Pyongyang agreeing to participate in the games.
