President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he plans to have an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller regarding his investigation into possible collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Trump said to the reporters at the White House when asked if he will submit to be questioned by Mueller’s team. “I would do it under oath,” he added.
Trump previously called the Russian investigation to be a “witch hunt” and a “hoax,” meanwhile the White House tried to comply with Mueller’s requests hoping that things will wrap up soon and Trump will be cleared of potential crimes.
The president stated that the interview with Mueller will happen in two to three weeks, till then his lawyers are working out the specifics of which questions will be asked.
Ty Cobb, the White House lawyer leading the response to the probe said that arrangements are still being worked out between the special counsel’s office and Trump’s personal attorneys.
Trump previously has said that he is willing to talk because of his belief that there is “no collusion” between members of his campaign and Russia.
“I couldn’t have cared less about Russians having to do with my campaign. The fact is — you people won’t say this but I’ll say it — I was a much better candidate than her,” Trump said, referring to Hillary Clinton.
According to The Hill, the president’s remarks come at a time when Mueller’s investigation has expanded to members of Trump’s Cabinet. The special counsel’s office interviewed Attorney General Jeff Sessions last week.
“I’m not at all concerned,” Trump said Tuesday regarding Sessions’ testimony.
Sessions, a former Alabama senator first was Trump’s high-profile campaign surrogate and strategist. was connected to Russia investigation for not revealing contacts he had with a Russian diplomat during the campaign, which led to Mueller being appointed.
Sessions was also overseeing the Justice Department when Comey was fired by Trump. Critics, however, say Trump fired Comey in an effort to end the investigation into his campaign.
