Speaker Paul Ryan announced on Tuesday evening that Representative Steve Womack has won the support from the Republican Steering Committee and is going to chair the House Budget Committee.
If everything goes smoothly and he is approved by the full GOP conference, Steve Womack is replacing budget Chairwoman Diane Black who is stepping down from the function because she will run for 2018 elections trying to become the governor of Tennessee.
After Representative Pat Tiberi announced his retirement, the Steering Committee, which is a group of leadership allies led by Speaker Paul Ryan, recommended that Representative Darin LaHood replace him on the Ways and Means Committee, which was announced by the tax-writing panel on Tuesday.
The Hill reports that Representative Jody Hice was endorsed by the Steering panel to replace former Representative Trent Franks on the Armed Services Committee.
Steve Womack was speculated to be the favorite for the new position since he was a leadership ally who played a key role when the Republicans managed to take back the majority back in 2010. Others that were competing for the spot were Committee (RSC) Chairman Rob Woodall and Representative Bill Johnson.
“I believe Steve Womack is the right man for the job of chairman of the Budget Committee. Steve’s experience in the House, commitment to fiscal conservatism, and relentless pursuit to safeguard taxpayer dollars make him extremely qualified to lead this important committee,” Ryan said in a statement.
Wommack has a big chair to fill and a lot of responsibilities in 2018 as he is expected to play an integral role in the shaping of the this year’s GOP agenda.
Paul Ryan said that the Republican party will need the budget reconciliation process this year in order to pass welfare or entitlement reforms, but it is going to be hard to do that since they will need resolutions in both House and Senate, and this looks like it’s going to be a hard election year for the Republicans.
