Trump Lawyers Met with Robert Mueller’s Team Before Christmas

President Donald Trump’s lawyers met with members of the team of special counsel Robert Mueller shortly before Christmas and according to the CNN, Trump’s outside legal team hoped to better understand the next steps in the probe and when it would end. The details of the meeting are not known.

“I know we, collectively, the lawyers, are looking forward to an expeditious wrapping up of this matter,” Jay Sekulow, a lawyer for the president, said a few days after the discussion with Mueller’s team.

Trump’s lawyers no longer predict when the investigation would end up. Previously, they expected it to end by Thanksgiving, later by Christmas or by the end of the year. Even Trump said that he believes that Mueller would treat him fairly.

“I think he’s going to be fair. And if he’s fair because everybody knows the answer already,” Trump told The New York Times last week.

This is not the first time that Trump’s lawyers have met with Mueller’s team, but the newest meeting came after investigators wrapped up interviews with White House officials they had requested to speak with, The Hill reports. Mueller is investigating the alleged Russian meddling in the American presidential election and connection between Trump’s team and the Russians. The president has denied any improper contacts with the Russians and said that the investigation was a “witch hunt.”

So far, the investigation has resulted in indictments of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and one of his associates Rick Gates. They are facing charges of money laundering, tax evasion and failing to register as a foreign agent.

Additionally, Trump’s former foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents about his contacts with a professor who had ties to Kremlin. Michael Flynn also pleaded guilty to lying to the bureau about his contacts with former Russian ambassador to the United States.
