About forty-one percent of the respondents in NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey think that Congress should hold impeachment hearings aimed at removing President Donald Trump from office, while 54 percent of Americans think Congress should not have impeachment hearings. Five percent are not sure. The poll shows that 70 percent of Democrats think that Congress should begin impeachment hearings and only 7 percent of Republicans support them. About 40 percent of independents support the hearings.
The results of the poll come while special counsel Robert Mueller investigates alleged Russian meddling in U.S. presidential election and the alleged connection between Trump campaign and Russians. The investigation led to a guilty plea from Michael Flynn, a former national security adviser. He is the first administration official to be brought down by the special counsel’s probe, The Hill reminds.
About 38 percent of Americans believe there was collusion, 35 percent believe that did not happen and 26 percent say they don’t know enough to say. Those who believe collusion occurred include 65 percent of Democrats, 35 percent of independents and six percent of Republicans.
Meanwhile, the poll shows that 38 percent of Americans will definitely cast a ballot for Trump’s Democratic opponent in the 2020 election, while 36 percent of registered voters would definitely or probably cast a ballot for Trump. Among Republicans, 43 percent say they will definitely vote for Trump, while another 40 percent say they probably will. But among Democrats, three quarters (73 percent) say they will definitely vote against Trump.
The survey of 900 people was conducted from Dec. 13-15. It has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
