Senate Republican John Cornyn said on Monday that the year-end legislation won’t include an immigration bill, adding that a measure to protect Dreamers will be dealt with in January.
“The president has given us enough time to deal with this before March and so I think that’s plenty of time and I expect us to meet it. If we can’t, then the president could extend the deadline if he chose to do so. But this is something we’re going to turn to, I’m sure, in January,” Cornyn said.
The statement follows threats by Democrats that they won’t support a government budget bill if GOP leaders do not agree to an amnesty for 3.24 illegal immigrants. Since then two amnesty packages have been prepared by Senators, which are most likely to be debated next year.
Republican Senator Chuck Grassley leads one of the groups proposing such packages, whose plan offers to grant work permits to immigrants in exchange for ending the chain-migration and lottery programs, thus significantly cutting legal immigration. Cornyn is part of this group.
Democratic Senator Dick Durbin leads the second group, which is offering Republicans tangible border-security measures in exchange for the amnesty of over 3 million Dreamers as well as the migration of their relatives. Four GOP Senators are also part of this group.
However, the Democrat’s calls for amnesty are unpopular with American citizens as they feel they are unfair to other Americans, polls show. Voters have even managed to deter GOP politicians from openly supporting amnesty.
Despite the high unpopularity of Democrats demands and threats, they are under great pressure by immigrants to reiterate the amnesty-or-shutdown threat, Breitbart says, adding that the illegals have already started using a #NoDreamNoDeal hashtag to demand a shutdown or an amnesty.
