Senator Cory Booker’s protection has been strengthened following death threats he and his family received, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement.
“The Newark Police Division has been notified by the United States Capitol Police (USCP) regarding a threat to the life of New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and his family members. As a result, members of the Police Division’s Executive Protection Unit have been assigned to provide security at the Senator’s residence in Newark,” Baraka said.
He added that they were working closely with the USCP to make sure that the senator can “carry out his duties of serving New Jersey residents in Congress in a safe manner.” The senator’s house in Newark has been put under 24/7 surveillance as well.
The exact nature of the threat has not been made public, according to CBS News.
Booker, who is an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, recently went to Alabama to rally support for Democrat Doug Jones before the special election, which put him in the spotlight. Additionally, Booker has called on President Trump to resign due to sexual assault allegations several women have made against the president and has blasted the Federal Communications Commission for repealing net neutrality.
Senator Booker has also been singled out as a possible candidate in the next presidential election, ABC News says.
