Democrat Jones Not Joining Calls for Trump to Resign

Democratic Senator-elect Doug Jones, who defeated Republican opposite Roy Moore in last week’s Alabama special election, expressed Sunday his belief that President Donald Trump doesn’t have to resign over allegations of sexual misconduct made against him.

“I don’t think that the president ought to resign at this point. Those allegations were made before the election, and so people had an opportunity to judge before that election. I think we need to move on and not get distracted by those issues,” Jones told CNN.

Seventeen women have accused Trump of making unwanted sexual advances against them before he entered politics. Accusations of sexual harassment against high-profile men in various industries have put a new spotlight on the allegations against President Trump, resulting in a number of Democrats urging him to resign.

Trump and the White House have repeatedly denied the allegations, which surfaced when an “Access Hollywood” tape of a 2005 conversation emerged, in which Trump speaks about groping women and trying to have sex with them.

Trump apologized for the remarks but called them private “locker-room talk” and asserted he had not done the things he talked about in the tape.

Jones’ victory in the Alabama election over Moore, who has also been accused of sexual harassment, was a severe blow to the president, who had endorsed Moore, Reuters says.

Jones also said that he’s ready to move forward despite the Republican’s refusal to concede the race, stating he is “ready to go regardless of whether (Moore) concedes or not.”
