Gillibrand Says Trump’s Tweet Is “Sexist Smear”

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand responded to President Donald Trump’s tweet, which he posted after the senator called for an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct made against the president, saying that she would not be silenced.

Gillibrand, who was among the six senators calling on Trump to resign was attacked on Tuesday by Trump who took to Twitter to vent his frustration with Gillibrand.

“Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office ‘begging’ for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump,” Trump wrote.

Soon after that, Gillibrand who might be a Democratic presidential candidate in 2020, responded to the criticism, maintaining she would not back down.

“It was a sexist smear attempting to silence my voice, and I will not be silenced on this issue.”

Trump refused to say what his tweet meant, but White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “only if your mind is in the gutter would you have read it that way … it’s obviously talking about political partisan games that people often play and the broken system,” referring to some people’s belief that the president’s tweet contained sexual innuendo.

Sanders added that Trump had used similar language before when referring to men of both parties.

Gillibrand was backed by other senators, including Elizabeth Warren who directed a tweet at Trump, saying, “Are you really trying to bully, intimidate and slut-shame @SenGillibrand? Do you know who you’re picking a fight with? Good luck with that, @realDonaldTrump. Nevertheless, #shepersisted.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called Trump’s attack on Gillibrand “nasty, unbecoming of a president,” but didn’t call on the president to resign over sexual harassment allegations.
