President Donald Trump’s tweets about the investigation into the alleged contacts between his campaign and Russia caused worries among lawmakers from both parties. According to Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, the president could be wading into peril by commenting on the investigation, Reuters reports.
‘’I would just say this to the president: There’s an ongoing criminal investigation. You tweet and comment regarding ongoing criminal investigations at your own peril,’’ Graham said.
Trump tweeted that he hadn’t asked former FBI Director James Comey to stop investigating former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Previously, he tweeted that he had to fire Flynn because he had lied to the Vice President and the FBI. Trump’s lawyer John Dowd said that he had drafted the tweet which said that Flynn had to be fired because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI and which, according to some legal experts and Democratic lawmakers could bolster a charge of obstruction of justice. Dowd said that he made a mistake while composing the tweet.
‘’The mistake was I should have put the lying to the FBI in a separate line referencing his plea. Instead, I put it together and it made all you guys go crazy. A tweet is a shorthand,’’ Dowd said.
The lawyer the first time said Trump knew for a fact that Flynn lied to the FBI when he was charged. He added that it was the first and last time he would craft a tweet for Trump and said that he would take responsibility.
”I’ll take responsibility. I’m sorry I misled people,” he said.
Meanwhile, Senator Mark Warner said that even though Trump says Russia probe is fake news, evidence on contact between Russia and Trump’s campaign continue to surface, Newsweek reports.
‘’This president has been obsessed with this investigation, always saying, ‘there is nothing there.’ But each week another shoe drops where we see more evidence of continuing outreach from Russians and some response from the Trump campaign and Trump individuals,'” Warner said.
