Democratic donor Tom Steyer defended on Sunday his $20 million campaign in which he urges Congress to impeach President Donald Trump, which he believes must be done as soon as possible.
“The fact of the matter is this President has performed in a lawless way throughout the campaign and throughout his presidency and he is an urgent threat to the American people,” said Steyer, adding that it was wrong to just sit back and not do anything.
He was adamant that the people want the president impeached, but some Democratic leaders, among which Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, said now was the wrong time to push for impeachment.
Other House Democrats, however, have expressed support of Steyer’s calls for impeachment. He said on Sunday that his campaign was exclusively driven by his belief that Trump’s actions relating to the Justice Department’s investigation into Russian meddling with the election have violated the Constitution. Steyer denied the implication that bolstering his political brand was the motivation behind his ad buy.
“It’s clear that he has violated the Constitution in the sense that he’s violated his trust with the American people through obstructing justice by firing the head of the FBI for what he said explicitly was over the Russia investigation,” Steyer said.
According to him, Trump has also taken money from foreign governments which only offers further proof that he should be impeached. There have been rumors that Steyer might be thinking about running against Senator Dianne Feinstein in 2018, but he refused to confirm whether that was true.
“Well, I haven’t said I’ve considered running. What I have said is that I haven’t ruled it out. The fact of the matter is I am spending all my time working to make sure that this petition gets as broad a listen as possible,” he said.
