Trump Says Alabama Voters Must Elect Moore

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Democrat Doug Jones must not win in Alabama and urged voters to elect Republican candidate Roy Moore, amid sexual harassment allegations against him.

“I can tell you one thing for sure: We don’t need a liberal person in there, a Democrat, Jones. I’ve looked at his record, it’s terrible on crime, it’s terrible on the border, it’s terrible on the military,” Trump said.

The president also noted that he believed Moore was innocent of the accusations made against him, adding “he says it didn’t happen. And you know, you have to listen to him also.” After repeated questions by reporters, Trump pointed out that in the eight races Moore has run until now, he has never been accused of sexual misconduct, the 40-year-old accusation surfacing only now.

Trump was also asked about his personal view on women coming out with allegations of sexual misconduct against politicians and other prominent public figures. He said “women are very special,” adding it was good for the society and for women so many things were coming out.

The president will announce next week whether he will be campaigning with Moore in Alabama. The president refused to comment on the allegations ever since he came back from his 12-day visit to Asia, where he said that Moore should step away from the election if the accusations against him were true, a stance he still holds.

However, top White House advisor, Kellyanne Conway, said the administration still prefers a Republican candidate in the Alabama race, despite the allegations he is facing. Moore again denied the charges on Tuesday, saying he never dated unerage girls, nor was involved in sexual misconduct with anyone. He pointed out the fact that at the time he worked as deputy district attorney and a circuit judge later on, maintaining he went “by the law.”

At a press conference he held the same day, Moore said he was getting proof of his innocence.

“It takes time to develop a case and file a case because you just don’t go file a case without some proof. And we’re getting proof, we’re getting things.”
