House Democrats Introduced Five Articles of Impeachment Against Trump

Aware that they have no chance of success because the Republicans control both houses of Congress, House Democrats on Wednesday introduced five articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. Representative Steve Cohen was the one who introduced the articles. Democratic representatives Luis Gutierrez, Al Green, Marcia Fudge, John Yarmuth and Adriano Espaillat also endorsed the articles.

“The time has come to make clear to the American people and to this President that his train of injuries to our Constitution must be brought to an end through impeachment,” Cohen said.

The representatives asked for Trump’s impeachment because, according to them, the president obstructed justice when he fired former FBI Director James Comey, who was responsible for the investigation into the alleged Russian meddling in last year’s election. The Democrats also accuse Trump that he violated the foreign emoluments clause, which says that public officials are not allowed to receive gifts from foreign governments without the consent of Congress. They add that Trump also violated emoluments clause, which says that the president can not profit from his office. The fourth accusation is that Trump is undermining the independence of the federal judiciary, while the fifth accusation is that he is undermining the freedom of the press.

The White House responded to the push for impeachment. Sarah Sanders, White House Press Secretary, said that the time spent calling for impeachment would be better spent focusing on tax relief for American families and businesses.

“It’s disappointing that extremists in Congress still refuse to accept the President’s decisive victory in last year’s election,” she said.

According to the Republican National Committee (RNC), the Democrats’ move is a baseless radical effort, The Hill reported.

“House Democrats lack a positive message and are completely unwilling to work across the aisle, so instead they’ve decided to support a baseless radical effort that the vast majority of Americans disagree with,” said RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens.
