Former Arkansans governor and father of White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Mike Huckabee, blamed the Congress for Democrat election wins. He said that voters turned away from Donald Trump last week because they hate Congress, not President Donald Trump. According to him, the victories of the Democrats in New Jersey and in Virginia are a vote against America’s least loved institution.
“Was that a repudiation of President Trump? I think not. I think it’s a repudiation of a completely inept Congress who has so far failed to deliver on even the simple things like tax cuts and tax reform, which ought to be an easy layup for Republicans in Congress,” he said.
His stand might even have some basis in reality given that, as Newsweek reports, few Republicans can pull off Trump’s brand of populism, nativism, nationalism and xenophobia because few are as charismatic as the outsider president. However, Democrats consider their victories as a notable political transformation and a mandate for change.
“Virginia has told us to end the divisiveness, that we will not condone hatred and bigotry, and to end the politics that have torn this country apart,” gubernatorial winner Ralph Northam said after defeating Republican Ed Gillespie.
Trump also does not blames himself for the failures. He said that Democratic victories came after some candidates wanted to distance themselves from Trump and Trumpism.
“Ed Gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what I stand for. Don’t forget, Republicans won 4 out of 4 House seats, and with the economy doing record numbers, we will continue to win, even bigger than before!” Trump wrote on Twitter after Gillespie’s loss.
