During a summit in Manila, President Donald Trump said that immediately after he ends his visit to Asia, he would make a “major” trade announcement.
“We’ve made some very big steps with respect to trade, far bigger than anything you know, in addition to about $300 billion in sales to various companies, including China,” Trump told reporters.
The president didn’t give any more details about the announcement, only that he would make it on Wednesday and that it would detail what was happening in his meetings with China, South Korea, and other Asian countries with respect to trade. Trump jokingly told reporters he would give them a “chance to sleep” before he makes the big announcement.
The president also complained about the significant deficits the U.S. has with other nations and added that they “are going to be cut very quickly and very substantially.” Trump further referred to the special treatment he got during his trip to Asia.
“We very much appreciated. Red carpet like I think probably nobody has ever received. That really is a sense of respect, perhaps for me a little bit, but really for our country, and I’m very proud of that,” Trump added.
The president, alongside other world leaders, is currently in the Philippines where he attended the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Trump used his visit to Asia to further his trade agenda.
Before becoming president, Trump severely criticized free trade agreements and in January he announced the United States would be withdrawing from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Officials from 11 countries reached an agreement on Friday on the underlying elements of the Comprehensive Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, which does not include the U.S., Politico reports.
