Russia Lawyer: Trump Jr. Suggested Sanctions Law Could Be Re-examined If Trump Won

Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer who met members of President Donald Trump’s campaign, said Donald Trump Jr. told her that if his father won the election, his administration would look into reversing an anti-Russia law. The lawyer told Bloomberg that she went to New York City in June last year in order to inform Trump campaign officials that some Democratic donors had evaded taxes and to lobby against the Magnitsky Act. The Magnitsky Act is a law that imposes sanctions for Russia in response to the death of a wistleblower in a Russian prison.

“If we come to power, we can return to this issue and think what to do about it. I understand our side may have messed up, but it’ll take a long time to get to the bottom of it,” Trump Jr. reportedly told the Russian lawyer.

The president’s son allegedly accepted the invitation for the meeting with Veselnitskaya after he was told that she had dirt on Hillary Clinton, who was also running for president as his father. Trump Jr. described the meeting as a waste of time.

The reports about the meeting come amid investigations into the alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Last week, special counsel Robert Mueller delivered the first charges into the probe. Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his associate Rick Gates were indicted.

Allegedly, Manafort and White House adviser and President Trump son-in-law, Jared Kushner also attended the meeting with Vaselnitskaya, The Hill reported.
