Former President Barack Obama called for action on gun violence after the deadly mass shooting at a church in Texas on Sunday, The Hill informs.
“We grieve with all the families in Sutherland Springs harmed by this act of hatred, and we’ll stand with the survivors as they recover. May God also grant all of us the wisdom to ask what concrete steps we can take to reduce the violence and weaponry in our midst.” Obama tweeted Sunday.
At least 26 people were killed after a gunman opened fire at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. According to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the incident was the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s history. Obama pushed to pass new gun laws following deadly mass shootings during his administration, most notably after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, The Hill adds.
Last year Obama issued executive orders that expanded background checks for people buying firearms online or at gun shows. However, during this year President Donald Trump repealed another Obama rule that required the Social Security Administration to share information about mentally ill recipients of Social Security benefits. That information was included in background checks for gun sales, The Hill notes.
