President Donald Trump said on Thursday the judicial process has to move more quickly and be “stronger”, suggesting that he still stands by his criticism of the justice system which he previously called “a laughingstock.”
He maintained the justice system is unable to respond to tragic incidents such as the one that took place in New York City on Tuesday, when more that eight people were killed in a terror attack carried out by Sayfullo Saipov.
“This guy would be tied up forever in the court system,” Trump said in an interview on Thursday, implying that a conviction against Saipov would take much too long.
The president added that there were many such cases which “are going on forever” and noted that “the justice system has to go quicker and it has to be, really, stronger and fairer.”
Just a day before, Trump made similar but harsher comments condemning the justice system for not being quick and strong enough, calling it “a joke.” During Wednesday night’s news briefing, press secretary Sarah Sanders denied the president had ever said that, claiming that what Trump intended to say was that due to the slow judiciary process people called them “a joke and a laughingstock,” Politico reports.
“Particularly for someone to be a known terrorist, that process should move faster. That’s the point [Trump] is making. That’s the frustration he has,” Sanders said.
In a tweet later that night, Trump called for death penalty for Saipov. He also called for abolishing the diversity visa lottery that allowed the attacker to come to the United States legally.
