Clinton Criticizes White House for Failing to Implement Russian Sanctions

Hilary Clinton accused the Trump administration of taking a long time to implement the additional sanctions on Russia passed by Congress earlier in the year. The deal Congress reached also limits President Donald Trump’s power to block or ease sanctions without the approval of Congress. Clinton maintained that by not implementing these fresh sanctions, the president is letting an attack on the U.S. go unpunished.

“Congress passed overwhelmingly new sanctions on Russia and Putin’s cronies, oligarchs and others, forcing the president to sign it, but he hasn’t implemented it. What’s the lesson from that? The lesson is you can get away with attacking America.”

The list of those individuals and entities targeted by the sanctions was released by the Trump administration last week, several weeks later than the October 1 deadline, which was condemned by Clinton and lawmakers from both parties. The sanctions are to be fully implemented in January.

Clinton’s well-known antagonism toward Russia was additionally heightened last year, when her presidential candidacy was hurt by the country’s meddling with the election. She spoke at length about why she lost the election, based on her analysis, blaming former FBI Director James Comey for it. The reason she claimed was that only days before the election the FBI disclosed it had found more e-mails on Clinton’s private email server which she used as secretary of state and used them as weapons against her.

Clinton spoke at a reception at the Woman’s National Democratic Club where she also criticized the administration for its policy on contraception, claiming that limiting women’s access to contraception and their right to abortion corresponds to saying “women have no right to control their own reproductive capacity.”
