House Republicans could announce their tax reform bill on Thursday, as the administration doesn’t want to see delays stretch into next week, Politico reports. According to Politico, the bill was supposed to be announced publicly on Wednesday, but Speaker Paul Ryan told President Donald Trump on Tuesday that he needed another day to work out details among Republican factions. Trump answered that he didn’t care if the announcement took until Friday.
“It’s an additional 24 hours of suspense, not great for the blood pressure, but by no means fatal,” said Sage Eastman, former deputy staff director to Representative Dave Camp, former chair of the House Ways & Means Committee, which released its own tax proposal in 2014.
Politico notes that the bill is moving at relative lightning speed considering its massive size and scope, Politico. However, too many delays could signal a loss of momentum for one of Trump’s and the party’s most-touted issues.
“If we get to Friday afternoon and we still haven’t seen a bill, people will start to get genuinely concerned,” a source told Politico.
Trump had originally planned to host Republican members of the House Ways & Means Committee at the White House on Wednesday afternoon. The photo-op was rescheduled to Thursday, when Trump is also due to announce his pick for Federal Reserve chair, and on Friday he leaves for his first trip to Asia, Politico adds.
