Americans Are Giving Up Hope that Mass Shootings Can Be Stopped, New Poll Shows

Only 42% of the Americans believe that mass shootings can be stopped, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll conducted after the Las Vegas shooting. This is the lowest percentage in the series of polls conducted in the past two years. The poll shows that 37% of the respondents believe that mass shootings are a fact of life in America today.

Huffington Post reports that Americans who don’t personally own guns are 21 points likelier than those who do to believe that mass shootings can be stopped: 49 percent to 28 percent.
This is yet another poll that shows how much the political parties have divided the Americans, so two-thirds of the supporters of Hillary Clinton think that these kind of shootings can be prevented. In the meantime, only 28% of the people who voted for Donald Trump in the presidential elections, share the same opinion.

Most of the American citizens consider the gun violence a serious problem. Fifty-three percent think that it is possible to enact new regulations while preserving the right to bear arms. 49% of the respondents think that gun laws should be stricter, 30% want them not to be changed and 10% want them to be relaxed. According to the poll, 41% of the respondents have said that the Congress should take action to reduce mass shootings and 43% think that these tragic events can not be reduced with legislation. Stricter gun laws are considered as feasible from 37% of the respondents, while 40% consider that currently impossible. Gun policies are among the two issues that are most important for only 15% of the respondents.

The poll was conducted among 1,000 adult Americans after the mass shooting in Las Vegas.
