Republicans and Trump to Discuss Immigration at White House Dinner

President Donald Trump will be discussing an immigration bill with Republican lawmakers at a dinner in the White House, covering areas as border control and immigration reforms. The agenda will also include a discussion of the recently terminated Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Under this policy, numerous illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. while still underage were granted work permits and avoided deportation.

The attendees include House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the chairman of the Judiciary panel, Bob Goodlatte and other Republicans, White House officials say. Their main aim will be to find a solution for the many young immigrants who were part of the program that ends in March 2018. For that reason, the President gave Congress six months to draw up legislation intended to help those benefiting from DACA.

Several weeks prior to the dinner, Trump announced that he intended to make a deal with Democrats to protect “Dreamers,” as these immigrants are often referred to. The deal may include tighter border controls, say GOP lobbyists. Republicans also demand that the DACA deal include a bill which would help decrease the number of immigrants who are granted admission to the U.S.

Almost 800,000 people are beneficiaries of the program which protects them from deportation and allows them to get education and legally work in the country. The deadline for these immigrants to renew their period of deferred deportation, lasting for another two years, is October 5.

The termination of the DACA policy by President Trump was met with opposition by industry magnates and the entire business community in general, with over 300 companies defending it in an attempt to preserve the program, reports The Hill.
