Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke on “Face the Nation” where he claimed that the tax plan proposed by President Donald Trump’s administration focuses on reducing taxes for the rich, and not the middle class as is asserted. He also addressed the Republican’s claims that their tax plan will not increase the state’s deficit. Schumer pointed out that the Republican’s plan to cut taxes on the rich cannot promote growth, as it has never managed to do that. He adds that by cutting taxes on businesses the plan works in favor of the wealthy, which stands in direct opposition to what House Speaker Paul Ryan says.
These views were shared by Senator Bernie Sanders, who also expresses his doubts regarding the tax plan. Sanders said that he considered it outrageous to claim that the plan does not favor the rich, especially in a time like this when there is huge inequality in terms of income and wealth, and the wealthy just keep getting wealthier.
Schumer pointed to Kansas’ tax cuts of 2012 which caused a great deficit in the state budget and the need to cut school funding, asserting that they are an indication of the possible outcome if Republicans continue to rely on “fake numbers” to further their cause. The Democrat also suggested that Republicans need to cooperate with Democrats and consult them if they want to achieve any real progress with the tax plan. He points out that there has to be compromise and not ultimatums on one side in order for true bipartisanship to take place.
