White House and Congress on Monday vowed to help Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Maria, even as some Democrats slammed President Donald Trump for not focusing enough on the island, The Hill reports.
The Congress will work “to ensure necessary resources get to the U.S. territory,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said Monday.
“The stories and images coming out of Puerto Rico are devastating. Our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico remain in our prayers as we make sure they have what they need.” Ryan noted.
Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Brock Long and Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert will assess the damage that Hurricane Maria has done to Puerto Rico. Washington’s response to Hurricane Maria comes amid dire warnings from officials there, as Governor Ricardo Rossello during the weekend stressed that federal aid has not come fast enough.
“We still need some more help. This is clearly a critical disaster in Puerto Rico. It can’t be minimized and we can’t start overlooking us now that the storm passed, because the danger lurks.” Rossello told the Washington Post.
