National security adviser H.R. McMaster repeatedly dodged on Sunday when asked whether he can work with White House strategist Steve Bannon, Politico reports. McMaster and Bannon, who used to run the right-wing nationalist website Breitbart News, are reportedly in conflict with each other as they work in the Trump administration.
NBC’s Chuck Todd, in an interview Sunday morning on Meet the Press asked McMaster three times whether he can work with Bannon, and each time, McMaster responded broadly about his commitment to serving President Donald Trump, without commenting on Bannon specifically.
“Can you and Steve Bannon still work together in this White House or not?” Todd asked him first.
“I get to work together with a broad range of talented people, and it is a privilege every day to enable the national security team,” McMaster responded.
“You didn’t answer. Can you and Steve Bannon work in that same White House?” Todd noted.
“I am, I am ready to work with anybody who will help advance the president’s agenda and advance the security, prosperity of the American people,” McMaster said again.
“Do you believe Steve Bannon does that?” Todd prodded.
“I believe that everyone who works in the White House who has the privilege, the great privilege every day of serving their nation should be motivated by that goal,” McMaster said, before Todd concluded the interview.
