President Donald Trump threatened to sue the United States Golf Association if the group moved the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open from his golf course in New Jersey, USA Today reports.
Trump reportedly threatened to bring legal action against the organization if they relocated the event from the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., USGA’s executive director Mike Davis told members of the group’s executive committee.
Davis reportedly told the members about Trump’s threat during a conference two years ago, near the start of Trump’s presidential campaign.
“We can’t get out of this. He’s going to sue us. As a matter of policy, the terms of our contracts with championship host sites are confidential and accordingly the USGA will not comment,” Davis said in a statement to the publication.
“We are excited that our U.S. Women’s Open Championship week has begun and are focused on providing the ultimate test of golf for the best female players in the world,” he said.
Trump Organization Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer Alan Garten and Executive Vice President of Development Larry Glick did not return a request for comment to USA Today.
Trump’s golf course has become a regular weekend destination for the president. He has visited the New Jersey property 11 times since taking office, according to a NBC News tracker. The tournament is set to begin at the Trump golf course Thursday morning.
