Kaine on Russia Probe: This is Moving into Perjury, False Statements and Even Potentially Treason

Virginia Senator Tim Kaine on Tuesday said the investigation into the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election is now “beyond” obstruction of justice.

“The investigation – it’s not, nothing is proven yet, but we’re now beyond obstruction of justice in terms of what’s being investigated,” Kaine told reporters.

“This is moving into perjury, false statements and even potentially treason.”

The comments come following a report that Donald Trump Jr. met last year with a Russian lawyer with ties to the Kremlin after being promised harmful information about Hillary Clinton.

On Monday, The New York Times reported Trump Jr. was told before his meeting with a Russian lawyer that the harmful information about Clinton was part of a Russian government effort to help Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

The publicist who set up the meeting last year between Trump Jr. and the Russian lawyer told Trump Jr. in an email that the potential information was from the Russian government in an attempt to help his father, according to The Times.

In a statement to the paper, Trump Jr.’s lawyer dismissed the report, calling it “much ado about nothing.”

Trump Jr. on Tuesday went after the media and Democrats after the new details about the meeting surfaced.

“Media & Dems are extremely invested in the Russia story,” Trump Jr. tweeted Tuesday. “If this nonsense meeting is all they have after a yr, I understand the desperation!”
