At least 43 percent of Americans want President Donald Trump to be impeached by Congress, which is a five-point increase from the 38 percent who felt that way last week, recent poll launched by Politico/Morning Consult has found.
“If President Trump was hoping his foreign trip would shift the conversation away from scandals, he may be out of luck,” said Morning Consult Co-Founder and Chief Research Officer Kyle Dropp.
The poll also shows that 45 percent of Americans don’t want to impeach Trump and that 45 percent approve of Trump’s performance as president. A whopping 50 percent disapprove of how Trump has conducted himself in the Oval Office.
On the impeachment issue, there is a predictable partisan split, with 71 percent of Democrats supporting it and 76 percent of Republicans opposing it. Only three American presidents in history have faced legitimate impeachment threats.
While poll respondents were not asked explicitly to react to Trump’s first foreign trip, the poll shows voters are sceptical of Trump’s aspirations to help Israel and the Palestinians strike a long-sought peace deal. Only 9 percent think it’s very likely Trump will be able to broker such an agreement. More say it’s either somewhat likely i.e.18 percent, not too likely or 28 percent and not likely at all or some 31 percent.
An analysis of all polls by FiveThirtyEight found that on average only 39.1 percent approve of the president’s performance so far, compared to 54.1 percent who disapprove of it. When compared to his 12 predecessors, Trump surpasses only one of them when it comes to popularity at this point in his presidency: Bill Clinton, whose approval rating was a mere 36.8 percent at 132 days into his first term.
Nine of the 12 presidents had approval ratings of at least 60 percent, including Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and Barack Obama.
