In a letter issued to the Biden administration on Friday, a group of 22 House Republicans demanded information regarding claims that federal organizations have transported undocumented immigrants for abortions, Fox News informed.
The coalition, led by Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., wrote a letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas in response to recent media reports that the federal government may have flown and driven minors from Texas shelters to abortion facilities in other states over the previous nine months.
According to a report by Reuters earlier this month, White House officials are looking into rules that would allow women and girls held by immigration authorities access to abortions.
According to internal papers published by The Wall Street Journal on July 12, DHS officials have also recently prepared a memo telling immigration detention facilities that women in their care should have access to abortions regardless of where they are.
Biggs said in a statement to Fox News Digital that the Biden administration “is currently viciously sending alien youngsters in federal custody to undergo abortions.”
“The awful crime of performing or aiding abortions in DHS or HHS custody is a terrible use of federal money, and it must stop. Minors are being transported across state lines for abortions.
Biggs’ letter from last Friday included a list of inquiries for both Mayorkas and Becerra.
Republican colleagues and he questioned the number of illegal immigrants the federal government had transported for abortions, the program’s financial impact on taxpayers, and if their organizations had obtained parental permission before transporting minors for abortions.
Becerra stated last month that HHS would investigate all available options to make sure that all women could get abortions.
Days after the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision was overturned by the Supreme Court, Becerra made his remarks, thereby leaving abortion regulation in the hands of state legislatures.
