Republican Party donors and leaders are talking about how best to stop former president Donald Trump from running away with the nomination again in 2024, POLITICO reports.
But the GOP and its big donors do not have a clear plan to stop him.
Dozens of Republican Party members, donors, strategists, and grassroots leaders say they are all discussing amongst themselves how to make sure that Trump does not once again take advantage of a split field and take the Republican nomination.
They fear that if Trump is the nominee, it will cost the GOP, not just the presidency, but also the chance to take the Senate and cling to the House of Representatives.
This week, big donors like the Koch Brothers-affiliated Americans For Prosperity and the anti-tax behemoth Club for Growth signaled that they were looking to rally around a Trump alternative.
The Iowa Caucus is hovering above the party at 11 months away. Party insiders are now saying this question of how to stop Trump is the main one floating overhead.
And they need an answer soon before too many contenders pile on.
It is also a conversation reminiscent of one many had before. Back in 2016, senior Republicans fretted that putting Trump on top of the ticket would spell certain doom.
“If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed,” Lindsey Graham notoriously tweeted. “And we will deserve it.”
Graham soon ironically became a close friend of Trump.
The big fear among donors and other massive party players is that, like in 2016, a number of challenges to Trump will jump into the primary and linger too long, splitting the field and allowing Trump to win.
The question for the GOP is how to proceed. Even some of the Republican rich are at a loss on how best to move forward in hopes of winning the next election.
