Lindsey Graham Comes Under Fire over Abortion Ban Plans

Republican senator from South Carolina Lindsey Graham was grilled by Fox News anchor Shannon Bream on Sunday over his plan to outlaw abortions statewide after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Bream questioned the senator during an appearance with Fox News Sunday about his opinions on putting out such a law before of the approaching midterm elections since it would impact the GOP’s chances in the elections.

“I’m pro-life, even in an election year,” Graham said. “And to those who suggest being pro-life is losing politics, I reject that.”

On Tuesday, Graham unveiled a new federal legislative proposal that would prohibit “on-demand” abortions beyond 15 weeks, with the exception of rape, incest, and situations in which the mother’s life is in danger.

“I don’t apologize for being pro-life. I think the pro-life movement has found a position that most Americans will agree upon.”

As soon as Roe v. Wade, a 1973 historic decision that granted a woman the right to an abortion on federal property, was overruled by the Supreme Court in June, Bream challenged him about what he had stated at the time.

At the time, Lindsey Graham asserted that “there is nothing in the constitution that provides the right to abortion as a Constitution principle” and that the Court had reinstated the pre-1973 status quo in which the states had discretion over the medical treatment.

According to NBC News on Tuesday, GOP strategist Chris Mottola called Graham’s measure a “bad idea,” which some fellow Republicans had opposed as having the potential to split the party and have a detrimental effect on voters before the midterm elections.

The majority of the members of Mitch McConnell’s conference want that issue to be handled at the state level, the Senate Minority Leader stated on Tuesday.

On CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, Republican Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota stated that “a better approach probably will be to allow states to work through this” and indicated he disagreed with Graham’s suggestion.
