An associate of former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows made a threat to former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson to not cooperate with the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection on the capitol.
Hutchinson received at least one message threatening her.
The message was the second of two warnings that the select committee disclosed at the end of its special hearing this week. Hutchinson testified before the committee about how Donald trump directed a crowd he knew was armed to march on the Capitol.
“[Meadows] let me know you have your deposition tomorrow. He wants me to let you know that he’s thinking about you. He knows you’re loyal, and you’re going to do the right thing when you go in for your deposition,” the message said.
The message was then presented during the closing remarks at Hutchinson’s hearing by the vice-chair of the panel, Liz Cheney.
Cheney characterized the message as improper pressure on a crucial witness, which could extend to illegal witness tampering or intimidation.
Who exactly sent the message to Hutchinson remains unknown.
It is suspected that the committee wants to interview the person directly, which would mean that the individual was a close associate of Meadows.
The message apparently came before Hutchinson’s second interview with the committee. Before her fourth deposition, which preceded the public testimony, she changed lawyers.
