Zelensky Shuts Down Newsmax Claim Trump Would Have Stopped Russian War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shut down a Newsman interviewer to attempt to get him to say that there would be no war in Ukraine if former president Donald Trump were still the U.S. leader, The Independent reported.

Newsmax anchor Rob Schmitt interviewed Zelensky in Kyiv this week about the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine. Newsmax is a right-wing outlet known for its outward and obvious support of Trump.

Schmitt asked Zelensky if different American leadership and different Western leadership may have “prevented this aggression”.

Schmitt continued to state that “many” Americans believe that if someone like Trump was still the president, this invasion “would not have happened.”

Zelensky responded firmly: “I am sorry if I’ll be saying something that you don’t like, but for us as the country in war, it doesn’t matter whether it’s Democrats or Republicans. It’s the people of the United States that support us.”

Zelensky said that Ukraine was grateful for the assistance from the American people, whose money is being allocated to provide humanitarian, financial and military support to Ukraine.

Trump has touted the idea that if he was still in power, somehow he would have prevented Russia from invading.

Analysts and experts in the field, however, say that this is quite clearly not true, but another inflation of Trump’s ego.

Zelensky said in the interview it was important for American institutions such as Congress to continue to work the same regardless of who is in power in order to keep “the values of the United States.”

Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in 2019 amid allegations that he wrongfully tried to pressure Ukraine to provide political help for his re-election, after holding back military aid to Ukraine.

In February, on the day Russia invaded Ukraine, Trump claimed if he was still in office this would have never happened. It came only hours after he championed Russia’s build-up of forces on its border with Ukraine, calling it both “genius” and “savvy.”
