Former United States Secretary of Defense Mark Esper stated on Tuesday that if Donald Trump campaigns for president again in 2024, the Ex-Pentagon Chief will not vote for him, citing Trump’s lack of honesty and his unwillingness to put the country’s interests ahead of his own, Reuters reports.

On the question if he would support Trump in 2024, Esper answered “No,” becoming one of the first Trump Cabinet officials to publicly reject their former boss’s candidacy.

Alternatively, before the November midterm legislative elections and the 2024 presidential race, the former defense chief advised his political party to seek new leadership and focus on four basic issues: a strong military, fewer taxes, deregulation, and conservative judges.

Trump, who was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden in his re-election effort in 2020, has not declared his candidacy, but has stated that his followers will be “glad.”

Trump is under investigation for his company’s financial transactions, his management of confidential data, and his participation in his followers’ attack on the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an attempt to prevent Biden’s victory.

Other Republicans, like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Trump’s former Attorney General Bill Barr, have declared they will support the party’s presidential nominee in 2024 regardless of whether it is Trump.

In recent media interviews, the Ex-Pentagon Chief, like Barr, has branded Trump a danger to democracy. In a reaction, Trump referred to Esper as “weak and completely ineffective.”
