Special Grand Jury in Georgia Approved in Trump Election Probe

Georgia judges have granted the request of its top prosecutor to impanel a special grand jury in order to investigate what efforts were made by then-President Donald Trump and his party to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results.

The approval of a special grand jury is the latest step in an ongoing probe into Trump and his supporter’s actions after he lost in the Georgia election.

The grand jury was requested by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, the local district attorney, and was approved by a majority of judges who sit on the county’s superior court. Last week, Willis made the request and said several witnesses and potential witnesses have refused to cooperate with the ongoing probe without a subpoena, including Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger.

A special grand jury has subpoena power as well as other investigative powers, including the power to obtain documents. It is devoted solely to one case.

Approval from the Superior Court of Fulton County means that the special grand jury will begin May 2, and could last up to a full year.

One of the events she is looking into was the infamous call from former President Trump to Raffensperger to “find” the needed votes to overturn the election.

Just days before Congress gathered to certify Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory a year ago in January 2021, Trump called fellow Republican Raffensperger and asked him to overturn the results. Georgia went to Biden’s victory by approximately 12,000 votes. Trump requested Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes.”

After the request for a special grand jury was made, Trump hammered on with his proven-baseless claims about election fraud, saying that the jury should not be looking into his “perfect phone call,” but instead larger scale voting fraud. Voting fraud has been continuously disproven for the 2020 election.
