Amazon is Opening a Clothing Store

Do you want to go shopping at Amazon? No, not online. In person.

Amazon launched a new venture outside of its giant realm of e-commerce, cloud computing, smart devices, content streaming, cashier-less technology, Whole Foods, and all of the other things the incredibly successful company has grabbed at.

The new venture is a physical clothing store. An actual space where you go to try on clothes rather than ship them to you from amazon.com.

Amazon made the announcement on Thursday that Amazon Style is coming. The store will have clothing, shoes, and accessories. It is opening its doors later this year at an upscale shopping complex in Los Angeles, California.

The store is set to expand across 30,000 square feet and will be neighbors to traditional department stores and clothing stores that Amazon has put pressure on for years. Nordstrom, J.Crew, H&M, and Urban Outfitters will be Amazon’s new neighbors, among others.

Amazon has actually grown to become the largest clothing retailer in the United States ever since it began selling clothes online a decade ago in 2002.

Purchases made inside of stores still account for more than 85 percent of retail sales in America, and so it is not a surprise that Amazon wants a bite of it.

Managing director of Amazon Style, Simoina Vasen, said in an interview that fashion is no different from any other type of shopping, in that consumers want a mix of online and in-store.

The store will be set up a bit differently from the typical fashion brand. Most of the clothes will be kept in the back, with only one sample of each item on display for customers to see on the sales floor. In order to buy it, the customer will use a mobile Amazon shopping app.

Inside the app, the customer will scan a QR code and pick up the item at a counter. Or, they can have it sent to a fitting room. The fitting rooms will be technologically advanced, featuring touchscreens that allow the customer to request size or color variations.
