Ukraine President to Host Senators Visiting to Reaffirm US Support

Amid the continuously escalating tensions between Ukraine – which continues to face an increasingly belligerent Moscow – and Russia, a bipartisan group of senators will meet with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials in Kyiv this week to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to Ukraine.

Zelensky’s meeting was slated for Monday, according to the press release on Sen. Rob Portman’s (R-Ohio) website.

Traveling along with Portman to Ukraine are Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Chris Murphy, Amy Klobuchar, and Richard Blumenthal as well as GOP Senators Kevin Cramer and Roger Wicker.

Sen. Portman, the co-chairman of the Senate Ukraine Caucus, noted in his statement that it is now more important than ever that the US supports Ukraine in its efforts considering the ongoing efforts of Kyiv to defend its territorial integrity against the increasingly aggressive Moscow while attempting at the same time to solidify its democracy by enacting critical domestic reforms.

Senators’ visit comes in light of the last week’s series of diplomatic meetings aimed to quell the ongoing tensions and avoid a conflict after which the US officials have warned that Russia, which has already massed more than 100,000 troops on the eastern border of Ukraine, continues to threaten Ukraine with war.

According to national security adviser Jake Sullivan’s warning on Thursday, Moscow intends to set off an offensive against Ukraine using a false flag operation as a pretext.

Previously on Saturday, Microsoft announced there was a security breach during which dozens of computer systems connected to Ukrainian agencies, organizations and the government had been infected with malware.

According to the tech giant’s statement, although the malware – initially detected on Thursday – was disguised as ransomware, it could infect computers and make them inoperable if activated by the attacker.

Kyiv was fast to blame Moscow for the cyber-attack.
