In a third attack in the last three days, the US Camp Victory which is approximately five miles from the Baghdad International Airport, the Iraqi base that had been housing American troops, was hit by a Katyusha rockets on Wednesday, an Iraqi military statement said.
According to the Iraqi army report, a rocket launcher with one rocket was found in a residential district Karkh in western Baghdad that Iran-backed militias were using in the past to fire rockets at the airport.
Wednesday’s attack resulted in no casualties or damage although, according to some reports, a fire reportedly broke out on the base due to the strike.
The rocket attack on the base, which activated the air raid sirens at the Baghdad airport early on Wednesday morning, was followed by a barrage of at least four Katyusha rockets targeting Baghdad International Airport.
According to reports, rockets have landed near the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Centre (BDSC) at the airport and have hit the tarmac without causing any casualties.
BDSC is hosting the American diplomatic personnel and troops and is considered a diplomatic location and part of the US Embassy.
No one has claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack nor for the drone attack that was avoided on Monday when two armed drones were shot down at Baghdad International Airport.
One of the downed drones had “Soleimani’s revenge” painted on one of its wings.
Monday marked the anniversary of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani’s assassination in an attack by an American drone on the Baghdad airport which also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, a deputy commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces, and US forces have been warned about a potential uptick in attacks over this period.
